It has been broken for weeks along with many other things. He picked up his rent $ yesterday and fixed everything but the furnace. I have told him for weeks about this, and now it's bitter cold and I can't live with it. Yesterday he said someone was coming to fix it (never happened), then 5-6 hours ago he said that he was getting ready to call the repair guy (hasn't shown up and I haven't received a call).

If the repairman doens't show up today, what should I do? A blizzard may be coming through by the end of the night.

Tell him that you are going to call the local building inspector if it isn't fixed by the end of the day today! He has had plenty of time to deal with it.

A rental house has to be in safe working order and that includes a workable furnace. You have a case here that you can take up with a city or state dept.---or a legal rep.
In the meantime head on over to a store to get yourself a heating throw to put on top of your comforter and a safe space heater.
Hope your LL comes through for you soon.
And God Bless!

Tell him you are going to call the State board of health and the attorney general's office on him if he doesn't fix the furnace. Tell him you may withhold the rent to pay for fixing the furnace yourself if he doesn't have it repaired. Read your lease too, and call an attorney that specializes in the area.

Call him and tell him that if there is not a repairman at the house by 5 pm, you will call one yourself on an emergency basis.

Then you will pay him and deduct the amount from your rent.

Keep a journal of all conversations, and if you have to deduct the money from your rent, mail it with a letter and a copy of the receipt. Good luck, bad landlords suck.

contact your housing counseling agency or any housing agency. You have the right to withhold the rent till the problem is fixed. Look in the phone book. We had a really bad landlord and they helped us and made him fix all problems besides our complaint.
