I here a ratteling noise comming from my torque converter like somthing is rolling around inside. the transmission is a th400, (recentely rebuilt with high performance clutches with new torque converter) the engine (454 was rebuilt with higher compression 40oversize pistons 10:5 compression, some head porting and 286 cam (matched with the head flow), 850 holey) and makes much more power. but back to the noise what could it be, the tranny doesnt shift as hard and the noise is getting worse? also the car weighs approx 4,500 pounds and has a 3.23 ring and pinion ratio, the car has beat a 4,000 pound charger SRT8 (425hp) by about 5 cars, can someone estimate how much power the car actually makes.

THe noise could be a loose bolt at the flexplate, or perhaps a cracked flexplate.

Hard to pin down exactly what your problem is. Noises in this area can be anything from a bad rear main bearing, to torque converter misalignment, to a blow front pump in the transmission. This area sees a lot of interaction.

Barring part failure or improper assembly, I'd say that it either a low fluid level, clogged filter or valve body (causing increased noise and reduced performance) or the toque converter could be contacting the inspection plate. The best way to narrow it down is to find out when it makes this noise ( cold idle, certain RPM, all the time, downshifting, anything that identifies the operation of the car that causes the noise or makes it worse.

Also the specific location the noise seems to be loudest. Use a mechanics stethoscope or a long handled screwdriver placed against the back of your ear and touch it to different suspect areas. Is the noise closer to the engine side (bearing), the transmission side (front pump) , top or bottom of converter (contacting).

Hope this helps good luck.

Could be the pump or shaft-was it a bench builder or was it pulled by a shop?Either way you should have a warranty.I have seen torque converters grenade as well especially in HP uses.Put a 3.55 gear in it and you'll notice a big improvement in launch time and wont sacrifice top end to awful much.Gotta 525 HP '69 Camaro BB 427ci myself -enjoy it!Have eaten a few Chargers myself-Get a desk top dyno and punch in specs-it is fairly accurate.

You are rhyming of a lot of numbers that are incorrect. Are you sure that the torque converter is making the noise? I would go with the flex plate or tranny pump problems. Best get it properly diagnosed.

your dad is right about the torque converter bolts. they can make a rattle noise and something else too, the harmonic balancer can too if the rubber insert gets busted.

Torque converters shouldn't make any noise. If you recently had it rebuilt, and now it makes noise, go back there and find out why.

have you pulled a hole shot?.............abuse after rebuilding for performance is common.......but performance doesn't come cheap.......breakage goes hand & hand with performance...first check your flex plate/flywheel for stress crack,s.......other than that....check your rebuilt tranny,..........a break in period is necessary......but anytime performance is an issue.....damage can be expected........how much power?.......take& have it tested on a dynomometer.......it will tell you what you want to know!
