So, pretty much, if I could make a premier Premiership, who would be in it?

I guess that means I have to first designate which of the 20 teams currently in the Premiership (or top 20) don't deserve to be there; for various reasons, not just form.

I would say that there are 3 teams (for sure) that shouldn't really be there and 3 more that I question as well; Watford, Reading and Wigan; and maybe even Fulham and Charlton. I would also add Middlesbrough, who have seen a recent surge in their talent but have been a sub-premiership team over their history.

But now, the question arises, who would replace them. One would be, even though I hate to say it, Leeds United. They have a long history and a dedicated fan club. They are crap now, but they use to be a solid club.

Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday are historically very successful clubs. They have both won nearly half a dozen league titles and have 3 or 4 FA Cups between themselves. They deserve to be there over others.

Sunderland under Keane well regain its composure and well eventually be promoted, but they well never again regain their historical glory

The Wolves are also a team that has recently been quiet but has had a respectable history.

Also, I would say Nottingham Forest, who have a good fan base and have been very successful in England and furthermore Europe (probably the third most successful English team in Europe).

Lastly, Preston North End, others might not agree, but Preston has seen great success in runs through the league and especially the FA Cup. I think they were the first team to complete the double, and though others may not agree, I think it is well deserved.

Therefore, my list woud be as followed (simply looked at league table here, but Man Utd is #1 in my book)

Manchester United
Chelsea
Liverpool
Arsenal
Bolton/The Wanderers
Portsmouth
Everton
Blackburn
Newcastle
Tottenham
Aston Villa
Manchester City
Sheffield United
West Ham (fountain of youth for English football)
Nottingham Forest
Sunderland
Sheffield Wednesday
The Wolves
Preston North End
Leeds United

ADD-ON- To Lampard, I am sick of you guy.

Chelsea is no where near the best club, in every way. Chelsea are totally dominated by Man Utd and Liverpool when it comes to trophy success. No Champions Cup compared to 2 and 5. 3 or 4 League Championships compared to 15 for Man Utd and something like 18 or 19 for Liverpool. FA Cups, what a laugh. How many have you won 1, 2? Man Utd have got at least 10 and Pool have got near that as well. Community Sheild? 2 or 3? Near 15 for both Pool and United.

The debate over fans is one that I can obviously win. United have been through the best and the worst, same with Pool. The minute Chelsea doesn't go through a long run of success or Roman leaves; leaving your club finanically dead, a large part of your fan base well leave with him.

A lot of United fans are glory hunters, and same with Pool, but we have somethig you don't have; a large base of strong supporters that love the club for the right reason, and would stay with that club through the absolute worst. You have, at your core, a small group of these supporters surrounded by a vast majority of band wagon jumpers.

All in all, Chelsea probably isn't in the top 10 list of historically great English clubs. Chelsea is without a doubt in the top 20, but top 10 may be pushing it and claming they are #1 is completely ridiculous.

ADD-ON '#1': I can't say Liverpool, its just not in me. English football would not be what it is today if it wasn't for Man Utd. If it wasn't for Bubsy Boy's you wouldn't have those 5, remember that, blah, blah, blah.

Either way, it is far from 'obvious' who the best club in England is, and the very fact that you say so is ignorant. You have 3 more (going to be two) more league titles, we have 4 more FA Cups (maybe 5 more soon). You have 5 Champions League victories, we have 2, yes.

There is no answer to the question, and you surely know as well as me that this discussion hasn't simply started here. Liverpool is a class club, but they're no Man UTd.

THE PRIDE OF EUROPE!

this question is just dumb. the top 20 clubs are the 20 in the premiership.

the idea of a 'premier premiership', to use Wittmann's handy term is elitist rubbish, enabling clubs with the most hype, and pretensions at being a big club such as Newcastle, to fare higher than 'unfashionable' clubs who've actually achieved something special on the pitch e.g Wigan and Reading.

having a large support doesn't count - even though large home crowds can help generate funds to buy good players, the final reckoning is on the pitch, not off it.

btw The Wanderers (the first FA Cup winners and five times winners in all) are not the same club as Bolton Wanderers. they're a completely different entity.

also, any poll taking recent trophy success into account should note Ipswich Town have be champions of England more recently than 10 of the clubs on Whittman's list. They're also one of only twelve English clubs to win a major European trophy.

Wittmann, interesting list but just to correct you...Bolton Wanderers have no connection at all with the defunct amateur team The Wanderers who won the FA Cup a few times in the 19th century. Also, "the Wolves" is merely the nickname of the team properly called Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Whilst Wittman's list is pretty much conclusive, I don't know how he could say that Man Und are number one. Liverpool have won the most league titles - 18 against 15 for United. They have also won 5 European Cups against United's 2. This is undeniable.
