Two ways. You can either copy & paste these characters: ¼ ½

...or you can hold down the "alt" key and type "0188" on the number pad for ¼ and "0189" for ½. If you go to start > accessories > system tools > character map you'll get a list of every character included in each font and the keycodes it takes to reproduce them.

select an OpenType font
hold down alt key and type 0189 will put ½ in you document when you let up alt key
alt+0188 = ¼
alt+0189 = ½
alt+0190= ¾

this doesn't work for all fonts though. They have to be OpenType which is an extension of TrueType fonts. Most of the "normal" fonts are OpenType. If you open the fonts folder in the Control Panel TrueType fonts have an icon with a "TT" image and OpenType have an icon with an "O" image.

As far as I know, you can only do it like you did: 1/2 or 1/4.
