An FTP, File Transfer Protocol, site is a server set up on a network , such as the internet, that hosts a place to share files with a community.

For example. If I sell network cards, I may set up an FTP server to make my drive and firmware upgrades available to my customers.

While Internet Explorer has a client built in so it seems seem less, FTP actually can be accomplished using a shell and entering commands into a command line. If you are using anything other than Internet explorer, you will have to download a client to use FTP.

I used to download shareware at ftp://ftp.cdrom.com.

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol.

You can download and use FTP software to allow you to connect to the FTP site and quickly download the content available.

So FTP sites are offering downloadable content using the medium of FTP as opposed to other download methods/protocols.
