I will soon be going off to college and I am torn on which to purchase. I hear Macs are great computers and will soon have a new OS out.I have used them before but i am worried about the compatability with certain applications that i may run into in the future (even though they run windows as well). However Ive always had a PC and and with Vista out i am somewhat interested in one of those, but i have no idea what company makes a laptop that is realiable and capable of running Vista with no problems in my price range (Im looking to spend around $1200). Which brand and model do you recommend. Thank you for your input.

Well firstly you need to understand that a Mac and PC could be the same thing because PC stands for personal computer, hence a Mac could be your personal computer system.

You mean Mac or Windows I guess.

Well for College I would always suggest Windows. They are much easier to use and all your work will be compatible.

If you work of an apple Mac and your College does not have Apple Macs then you will not be able to transfer work over.
Also Windows is cheaper.

The only benifit to a Mac is the added security.

Sorry I also forgot that you have never used a Mac before which makes me urge you to stick with Windows. Yes Vista has just come out as well which is fun in it's self to work out.

It really depends on what software you will be using.
Do you plan on gaming on the computer?
Yes the new macs can be made to be dual bootable (boot in Mac OS or Windows) and I have heard Vista works on them.
However you do have to buy Vista separately whereas a new Windows PC would come with it. If you plan on gaming, then aim towards a Windows PC as the Mac OS does have some gaming, but not nearly as wide of a selection as Windows.

What sort of major will you be targeting? That can make the difference too. For example, if you will be a Comp Sci major and you will be dealing with Visual C++ then you'd want a Windows PC. If you were targeting some form of Art major then the Adobe suite of products really works a lot better on Mac.

Microsoft makes Office for both PC and Mac so as far as Word/Excel/Powerpoint it doesn't really matter.

For Windows PC Dells aren't bad and I've also heard pretty good things about Acer as well.

Anyway, the decision has become much harder now that Mac's can run Windows. Keep in mind though that you will be paying a premium on the hardware for a Mac.

I'm in college and I have a Mac and I'm lovin' it! I can do a lot more on my Mac than on any other PC. The rick is to get Mac Pro-Care program which costs about 100 box but it gives you a lot back. You can get 52 sessions of training and you can get to meet a Mac tech any time you want and they are very helpful. I have an iMac which is a laptop and I bout it last summer for about $1000. You can get 10% discount on any Mac products with your student ID (once a year, that is school year, for discount on a new Mac computer). Mac is much safer than PC too because there are only a few viruses that attack Mac. Both my brothers and I have Mac and we are all very happy with our computers!

VIVA MAC!

I do alot of graphics works, and for that particular reason, I have a MAC. But for school - the most you will need your computer for is homeowork, Internet and Word or another document application. Macs are more for design, you'll have a harder time finding the appropriate programs for school with your Mac. They are great, but not as a school use computer. Good luck!!!

If you can manage it, the best is the new Intel Mac,

It is the best of both worlds......the ease and flexibility of Mac OS X and the practicality of Windows PC type system.

They both run on the new Macs the best choice in my opinion; two computers for the price of one and my next computer---no question.

I would check with the college you are planning to attend. A lot of schools have specific requirements on laptops to help you make it through the next 4 years.

My daughter recently went through this and she had decided to go with a Mac, bnut after checking with the school and what was really needed, she went PC....

Good luck with your choices!
