I love sunflowers just as much to watch them grow than to see their blooms. They are very easy to grow. You will want to scatter a lot of seeds as birds will tend to get some of them.Plant the seeds in late May. Thin them out as they grow, water them at least twice a week and they will bloom in late August and early September. The blooms last about two weeks. I love them because they grow up and over my backyard fence and they have such big leaves and nice blooms.

I feed black oil sunflower seeds to birds all winter some seeds fall on the ground amid the grass. and they begin to grow as soon as soil temperatures are warm enough. If you just want a nice bed you can prepare one . planting a few seeds each week till mid summer will keep some in bloom all the time Look at seed packets for shorter varieties if they are to be with other plants , The foliage is a bit course especially on the taller varieties and the large heads require sturdy stems. Those perhaps should go in the background maybe near a wooded area or you may want to drive a couple of steel posts and run a wire @ 3ft above the ground where you may tie them up so they Will be there as bird feeders The birds will take the seeds out of the heads or you can remove them if you choose The flowers remain attractive several weeks those seeds which the birds leave in the winter i believe were in bloom late June in Zone5 ,mid Indiana

make certain you get the the superb option seed, no longer all sunflowers are tall (there's a bush type you do no longer desire that) plant 2 seeds(a million might desire to fail, if 2 be triumphant you may transplant the weaker a million) in a large bathtub so which you do no longer could disturb the muse device afterward, use a stable wealthy potting compost with a large handful of horse manure mixed into it make specific it relatively is truthfully drained, have a powerful help (2 via a million roofers batten will do precise) waiting simply by fact the top of the sunflower is heavy and could choose extra suitable than a cane, whilst plant is two foot tall water and feed two times weekly with a tomato feed or liquid manure (horse manure diluted in water, sunflowers can strengthen 18+feet tall so placed it up against a south dealing with wall.

Since i don't know where you live it is hard to say. However, I live in southern US and have no problems whatsoever growing them. They even just sprout from the bird seed i put out. Have grown them from very early spring until very late fall. The giant ones tend to take the warmer temps. Basically a sunflower will grow just about anywhere here. But like their name..they like "sun"

wait till after the last frost or freeze, they are very easy growers, and they will last all summer till the first freeze and you can save the seeds and plant them again in the spring....good luck
