Fred said that only the states of AL MS GA TN LA are called the south part of america, maybe also include VA NC and SC. What about TX and FL and so on? Can I say they are also in the south?

well fred came up a bit short. there are actually two souths in the U.S. - one geo-political, the other cultural.

The geographic south is defined as follows:
virginia, north carolina, south carolina, georgia, florida, alabamy, tennessee, mississippi, louisiana, arkansas

the cultural south includes all of the above states, plus:
east texas
southern kentucky
west virginia
southern maryland
southern missouri
eastern oklahoma
southeastern kansas

the cultural south also excludes south florida (draw a straight line through orlando from east to west)

LA, AR, MS, AL, SC and GA are typically thought of as the "Deep South". This term is extremely negative. The South would include TX, FL, TN, KY, NC, VA, MO and MD. This is a more benign term, as these states are not all thought of as backward.

Your friend Fred is right on part of his belief. AL, MS, GA, TN, and LA ARE southern STATES, NOT part of south america. The southern states are: OK, TX, AR, LA,MS, AL, TN, GA, NC, SC.
