My friend, I'm a conservative and I'm employed by the Federal Government. I have a basic faith in the Federal Government from the standpoint that most government employees really do good work and want to do a good job (and I take relief in the fact that even the worst Federal Government employee is better than the best United Auto Whiner), but I have no faith in ANY of our elected leaders on Capitol Hill. None of our Representatives or Senators really care about the people or what's best for this country -- all they care about is staying in office as long as they can so they can continue to pad their bank accounts at the taxpayers' expense. Dubya isn't the best President we've had, and he has made some really lousy decisions, but he knows more about leadership and making decisions based on principle than the former flag-burning dope-smoking secretary-screwing secret-selling son of a ***** will ever know.
There's a couple of things you need to be aware of, though: (1) You would accuse conservatives of scrapping the Constitution whenever it becomes inconvenient, but liberals are willing to add things into the Constitution that aren't there, such as the so-called "right" to have a job (and not just ANY job, but one that allows you to support your entire family to the point of luxury), the so-called "right" to free medical care, the so-called "right" to a free college education, and the so-called "right" to a retirement. None of these things are guaranteed by the Constitution, and what's worse the liberals EXPECT all these things for the people but at the same time require nothing of the people in return. What's wrong with this picture? (2) The so-called Constitutional right to privacy is a legal fiction. There is no such thing. You are not allowed to do whatever you want in your own home. Are you trying to tell me the police can't arrest people who cook crystal meth in their own homes? Would you go so far as to say a man who gets his rocks off molesting children can do so as long as he does it in his own home? Wrong and wrong. Look and see what the government is trying to do here -- they are trying to identify threats here on American soil BEFORE they become problems and cost innocent Americans their lives. Besides, if you're not doing anything wrong, what's the big deal? Stop being selfish and look at the big picture -- if someone tapping phones in your area stops a terrorist cell that plans to detonate a bomb outside your workplace or school, isn't the "invasion" of your privacy worth it, or would you rather keep the government out of the wiretapping business and get blown up by your unfriendly neighborhood American-hating cowardly terrorist? (3) The war in Iraq is a mess, and right now the goal is to try and stabilize the existing government in hopes that it will stand over time. Think about it -- if we just leave the Iraqis to their own devices the factional fighting will continue, hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of innocent Iraqis will be killed, and for what? To put another deranged lunatic in charge who will point to the fact that the U.S. left them just when they needed us the most in order to justify another anti-American movement?
It's sad because you sound like a typical narrow-minded, ill-informed liberal dupe who is simply regurgitating the same old tired party line. Open your eyes and see that the liberals don't have a clue, let alone a plan. Heck, they're still saying we're fighting a war for oil -- can't these morons get a new line? It wasn't true 16 years ago and it isn't true now, but the liberals (who are supposedly more intelligent, more enlightened, more understanding, more accepting, and more open-minded than their conservative counterparts) swallow that rash of B.S. hook, line, and sinker. Do me a favor and be better than that. Look with your own eyes, listen with your own ears, don't believe what you see or hear without investigating it, and come to your own conclusions -- don't get your opinions from CNN.

Um - wrong answer! I *don't* have faith in the government.
"Think you can trust the government? Ask an Indian."
But I'll tell you how I see the situation, since you asked. First of all, privacy is merely an illusion. *Anyone* can find out way more than you'd be comfortable with them knowing - it's a matter of patience and money. THAT should scare you. The government, on the other hand, is too busy to worry about your day-to-day life.
If you are calling someone in Hamas or Hezbollah, you are a threat to my country and our security and should not expect to drape yourself in our rights for protection.
Have a nice day!

I think it's just the opposite. Look at the overall budget of the United States. Way over half of it goes to social security, welfare, entitlements. Who's trusting who to keep those welfare/SS checks coming in every month? Who set up the big government SS. welfare state (new deal, great society, no real reforms)?? Huh?? Liberals!!
Who do you trust with your retirement (a system setup by liberals, funded by liberals, maintained by liberals, voted to keep "just the way it is" by liberals)???
I sure don't.
As for the war, yeah, it's a bad situation, but the consequenses of pulling out in a vacuum are FAR worse than staying. You should try studying (I mean really studying) the history of the region and the culture, before mouthing off about the Gub'mint.

I think that arcticchick answered your question, though she doesn't seem to think that she answered it.
They put so much faith in the government because they're paranoid, afraid, and just generally want to trample other people for their own purposes... which is what they use the government for.

Conservatives are the worst at managing government. They hate it so much, they don't know what to do. Every conservative administration after Ike has left government more broken than before. Especially "King Ronny Ray-Gun."

interesting point.
it seems conservatives put more faith in our government to uphold the constitution whereas they have little faith in our govt to spend money wisely.
with liberals it seems the opposite.
