Hi,
I'm the same. My partner and I have a long distance relationship and same as usual, if Valentine's day doesn't rest on a weekend, then we are apart for this day.
What I gave him last year which he loved, was a gift wrapped in a thin box, and I hinted that it was a big heavy book (he wasn't happy). What it actally was, was a framed cartoon picture of us both in a senario which I created.
I sent a drawing company our pics and told them I wanted him to be in front of an Austin Martin (as he loves James Bond), dressed in a Welsh shirt (obviously he's Welsh), with me next to the car with the body of Laura Croft (another fantasy of his).
Now that's one picture that isn't moving from his wall, and he swears it'll be the first thing he hangs in our own home when we have one!!
Enjoy the day!

You say it's a "lil bit of a long distance relationship." Are you actually going to be together for V-day? If so, the other suggestions here are pretty good. If not, I'd go with a phone call and a small, thoughtful gift that fits his interests, like a book or a DVD or something for one of his hobbies.
One thing to check first is whether he wants/expects to do anything for V-day. A lot of guys are downright allergic to it; my boyfriend and I pretty much treat it like any other day, and our mostly-ignored anniversary is the same week (we don't count to the day, but it might even be the same). We're pretty mushy in general, though.
Relax and don't feel too pressured about it; it's just a day.

Cook him a meal or do something you both enjoy. Why not recreate your first or fave date with him?
