My baby is 4 1/2 months old and slept throught the night until he got an ear infection and now he is awake every two or three hours. Usually he goes back to sleep if i rock him but the dr thinks that we should push him to sleep through the night. The dr also said that we should just let him cry it out. So last night i let him cry and he fussed for 15 minutes and went to sleep then woke 5 minutes later screaming and i gave in. I cannot just let him cry like that. I know that you are not supose to go in and comfort him but i feel bad just letting him cry. Any suggestions on what i could try besides the cry it out method that kills me. I know I know i am being a softy but oh well.

girl your r not being a softy, i know your pain. i won't let my 4 month old cry either at night. i have tried giving him a bottle with his breast milk instead of nursing him at night. also i been putting him in his cradle swing until he falls asleep than transferring him into his crib. so far it has been working i have been getting him to sleep for about 5-6 hours now but i try different things, i set up a routine and try to stick with it. also i stopped letting him nap in the day for long periods of time. these r just some suggestions, the answer community had given me when i posted this question not long ago

Whenever they get sick it just throws things off. My daughter just cut some teeth at 10 months and her sleep had to be re-trained. I have used the controlled crying method. Your baby is kinda young but after 6 months or so you will notice that she'll stay up more to play or for attention. That is when you can institute some sort of sleep training. But for now, try a really firm routinue that she knows mean bedtime....bath, massage, story, music, lights out good night. Also say the same thing to her every night, i.e. night night sweetpea.

There are two theories about this. You CAN let him cry, or you can keep doing what you are doing and he will eventually (and who knows how long) go to sleep all night. Have you tried letting him sleep in bed with you or in your room? Have you tried a bed time routine (short warm bath, low lights, soft songs)? I'll tell you now that if you let him set the rules, he will do that from now on. But I can see how you wouldn't want him to cry. Google Dr. Sears and see what he says, he sounds like someone you'd like.

At 4 1/2 months, it could be many things that are causing him to not sleep through the night any more. It's not just a "spoiled child" issue. My best baby book said when children reach 12-14 pounds, they will start to need solid foods... starting with a little bit of cereal mixed in their bottle... because babies at that weight need more substance to their food than milk can provide. The fact that he was sleeping through and then stopped clues me in that it might be something not related to his ear infections.

just an idea...
