Loads of people rely on the free AVG, just update it regularly. Viruses aren't the biggest threat on the internet any more. You'll pretty much only get one if you open an infected attatchement on an e-mail without scanning it first.
These are free and ok;
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ -AVG anti virus or
http://www.avast.com - Avast Antivirus
Theres also PrevX but I don't have a link to the correct address.
Bitdefender 8 is free but doesn't offer real time protection, but you can use it as a back up and scan once a week.

The best anti virus is not free, its Nod32 by a company called Eset. Google for their website and don't get it from any other source.

The best most effective virus scanners are the ones people use the most. The more people that use a scanner, the more definitions of viruses it has (definition is the footprint file of how many viruses are able to be detected based upon its signature).
If a lot of people are using the free scanner, then the free scanner company is probably picking up a lot of new viruses from people, therefore knowing how to protect better...
Most people do use AVG Michelle.
Avg Free is known for being 100% Free.
Avg Free is known for Daily if not hourly Free updates.
Avg Free is also known for using some of the least amount of SYSTEM RESOURCES while protecting you ( in other words, it doesnt hog a lot of memory while protecting you, which allows you computer to run faster doing everything else ).
Here is the link for AVG FREE
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-virus-free
DO NOT USE
Norton (it is a generic of symantec) It really eats resources.
McAfee, also uses up most of your computer memory speed.

AVG is okay FREE antivirus software - but we got hit by some viruses that were only highlighted by AVG. We had to download another (trial) antivirus to actually quarantine and remove them.
You pays your money you takes your choice.
Don't use Norton - it's a Nanny program. It's fine if you want to be asked before doing ANYTHING.
Personally, after AVG let us down, we paid for two years of BitDefender Internet security which covers two PCs - and we've been totally safe. It's not the cheapest AV, but we've definitely got piece of mind.

The sad truth of ALL virus protection and also spyware tools is that it gives a user a false sense of security! There is no particular software that knows at any given time what all malware is out there! It doesnt matter if its free or you paid for it! Malware is written daily and you can just about expect a new variant of a virus every week! People think that this software protects them so they can download freeware and or download files from file sharing sites! The BEST malware protection you can have is common sense! If you download freeware, you WILL get malware! If you use file sharing sites, you WILL get malware! Plain and simple! I use no virus protection! It slows my PC down! I fix peoples PCs for a living and usually find that 90 percent ot their problems come from these sites. You will see a hundred people disagree but its soley because the know no better! It makes no difference to me tho! I make more money now than ever these days! I have to laugh at people who say their system is clean too! I would bet the farm that I can find some form of malware on their system!

I second what Dr. House said. I would add that unless you are browsing the Internet with a machine you have no problems wiping the disk at any time and reinstalling all the software that you only connect to the Internet using the INTERNET FREEDOM DISK.
It's FREE! It's AWESOME! It locks your hard drives in a virtual vault so nothing can be written to your hard drives while you surf. Therefore you cannot hold an infection past a reboot.

My (free) Avast SE home edition has sent me two updates so far today, I can appreciate what another respondent has pointed out about free anti virus programs but I have relied on Avast for the last 5 years with no major problems. I have coupled it with other free programs, Zone Alarm (firewall) SpywareBlaster (Add-Spy-Mail ware blocker). True my system could be riddled with nasties but I don't think so I try various online checks and they say my machine is clean.

Freeware antivirus software can be good, but it has its limitations. I use AVG in my laptop, and it has been working ok. It even detected a trojan that my commercial antivirus had not detected (for whatever reason).
However, I use my laptop sparingly. My desktop, on the other hand, has Kaspersky. Having tried out Norton and MacAffee before, I believe Kaspersky offers good value for money.
If you can afford to subscribe to a commercial AV, go for it. Think of this: if your computer is infected because you did not want to spend any money in a reliable AV, how much data can you afford to lose? How much money/time will you spend in data recovery?

Free software from the Internet is good but not for a long term - basically if free software is very good so why are they selling it?use it for a short term and when you are buoyant enough to purchase the real package go for it.
They give you free things and in return they take advantage of your system, that is how it works. However AVG is very good, good luck and all the best
