The FEM is used to solve an otherwise complex mechanical problem by breaking the problem structure into simple to solve segments. For example a complex shape can be decomposed into simple, triangles, trapezoids or other 'simple' geometric figures.

The problems remind structures like trusses, however the FEM can be applied to other disciplines like hydro or aerodynamics.
