The best FREE messageboard software you can get to host your own board is one called YaBB from http://www.yabbforum.com/ with LOADS of mods for it available from http://www.boardmod.org/

However in order to run the scripts that make a messageboard work, you'll need a webhosting package such as the "1&1 Home" or "1&1 Business" package from 1&1 Internet, who can be found at:
http://www.1and1.co.uk/?k_id=3794345 (UK Service)
http://www.1and1.com/?k_id=3794345 (US & Canada service)

There are also free, remotely hosted messageboards such as http://www.proboards.com/
However the reason I eventually switched to using YaBB hosted on one of 1&1's LINUX servers is because the free remotely hosted ones were doing my head in because could hardly do anything to them in terms of customising / moderating + I lost 2 of the damn things in 6months from the hosts discontinuing their free service :(

there are various sites that host free web forums. i've used a site call bravenet i believe.. if that doesn't work just google for them. you set up the form on their site using their tools, its easy.. then link to that page from your site
