Get some programs that will delete all the deleted items that have gone through the recycle bin. They are still on there and a very cheap program can recover them. Something like Evidence Eliminator from eBay will do the trick. The longer it takes to erase it all, the better it is. It should take at least 4 hours to do its stuff. It will wipe it all and leave Windows alone.

Don't bother formatting the hard drive. There are free programs on the web that will recover the data. Use this;
http://www.sys-shield.com - AbsoluteShield File Shredder
Its used by businesses, the home version is free. It overwrites the hard drive about 20 times with a specific pattern of data that makes it impossible to recover.

1. You should save all your important documents on Cd or memory stick.

2. Re-install windows

Note: I sold a computer and transferred my ownership to the new owner. In case they do illegal things on it your not registered as the owner. You can do this on line if you have a Gateway Computer or call your computer manufacturer. Very important!

Good Luck!

A simple format will *not* permanently destroy your personal information. You need to get a disk wipe program, preferably one that offers "military grade" formatting. These programs not only delete your data, they also overwrite the disk repeatedly until there's no way to restore your old data. Here's a link to some freeware disk wipe utilities.
