First of all, are you out in the country. If not, check with local laws to make sure you can have a farm animal. I knew some people who went and got horses because their neighbor had some. They found out that horses were not allowed in the city limit but the neighbor was grandfathered from this law because he had horses on his place before the city was even there.

Ok, next up. We had pigs. They were not easy to take care of. Some people have pigs indoors and treat them like dogs. That is one thing, but if you have pigs outdoors in a pen they will get loose. You can bet on that. Pigs are smart and are natural escape artists. Some people make indoor pets out of them because they are so smart.

Chickens and ducks are fairly simple but they need more attention than most people realize. Also, not much of a loving animal. However, a pet chicken indoors is a very odd animal. They get used to humans and have interesting personalities. They are fun to have and keep the bug population down during the spring and summer. Plus, you have the egg factor.

Cows and horses are not recommended as "low maintence" animals. Horses need a lot of space and are very playful. Keeping one in too small a space is torture. Cows are the same, just not as playful as horses are (they do play though). They need plenty of space. Plus, feeding cows and horses is a hefty expense.

Goats and sheep. Ok, these guys are easier to maintain than some other animals. Give them room to graze, plenty of water, a bit of extra feed, and a place to go to in bad weather and they are happy. Some people use goats and sheep as tax write-offs. Get them and put them on a large property and now that property can get an ag-exemption. They are not a fire and forget animal though. You still need to keep an eye on them and know the diseases that affect them. Goats and sheep need pretty good fences, especially goats. Also, goats and sheep can become pretty aggressive. I have known sheep that were dangerous.

In any event, there will be a lot of work that goes with these animals. Maintaining their living areas, shovelling manure, fixing fences, vet visits, medicine, keeping insects and pests taken care of. There is a lot of work to keeping even a single animal as a pet. Talk to someone who actually has them and see what they recommend. Talk to the country ag-agent. They may even have brochures on the subject.

I've always loved the ducks I have on my property- I also have a goose....but she's a *****. Because of Avian Flu most places make you private order(Tractor Supply now does this). You can preorder chickens or ducks. They are relatively cheaper when you get them as chicks or ducklings and so cute. They aren't hard to maintain and ducklings when hand raised and are use to you won't bite if you try and pick them up.

Depending on where you live though ducks may not be reasonable so the next best thing would be horses or Llamas. Not only are they smart, but friendly when trained. Llamas are naturally curious and very approachable. and their babies- are just beautiful...for both horses and Llamas.

pigs

Pigs, also called hogs or swine, are ungulates native to Eurasia collectively grouped under the genus Sus within the Suidae family. The nearest relatives of the swine family are the peccaries and hippopotamuses.

Pigs are generally considered to be one of the more intelligent animals on the planet, being compared to dogs [3]. In one study conducted by a Pennsylvania State University professor, two pigs were taught to play rudimentary video games by manipulating a joy stick with their snouts while being rewarded with sweets [4].

Animals are not low maintenance. They are not for your entertainment. People that think so should not have them. Get a hamster.
