It's fine as long as the room gets enough light during the day for the fish to know that it is daytime. In the wild, the light they get usually isn't as bright as it is with the tank light on captivity, after all.

As long as you dont have a planted tank you will be fine. Make sure that the ambient light that gets to your tank is enough to tell the fish that its daytime. But the catch is you can't have too much light in there or you will start to get unwanted algae blooms. And once the algae startd its tough to get rid of it. The fish will be fine. Some fish species prefer less light, like plecos, most catfish and some platys are known to be more active in lower light as opposed to the spotlights most people put them under.

Do you need light? yes.....Yes they do for many reasons. The light will cause algae to form on the glass and plants (fake or real) the fish will eat some of the algae and the algae will help the natural bacteria that helps the fish stay healthy (not too much algae but just enough). Aslo, the fish need to feel as if there is day and night. Put a flourescent light on during the day and shut it at night. I do this with my tank and it seems to be doing pretty good.

They usually can do just fine without a light unless the room is always quite dark. The light is more for us to see them than anything. If the room stays very dark most all of the time it would be better to have the light on for about 10-12 hours a day to give them a day / night cycle.

without adequate light (sunlight or artificial light), the fish will eventually do what any living thing will do that doesn't get enough light; they will become sick and most likely will die.
If you keep a plant in a closet, it will wilt and die.
Most tropical Fish are very delicate, so they need at least as many hours of light as they do darkness.
If they're still going after a month, then they must be getting a lot of natural light or they have simply become aqua zombies

You should definately provide lighting. In the natural state, the fish receive about 8 hours of sunlight per day. The light enables fish to produce certain vitamins in their bodies. I assume that you have a tube, & not a filament light?

Well they will get a darker color. But as long as they get some kind of light like from the room they're in it will be fine as long as you don't have plants that nedd light too.
