I just want to know WHY? What makes you get in the car when you've been drinking? I'm wondering how you justify it to yourself.

Also driving under the influence of drugs that affect your judgement

Just like one of the answerers below, I knew someone who thought they drove better when they were drunk. She died from driving while drunk.

I know perception is altered when drunk, but then WHY NOT leave the car at home ...

It is bec they dont care about themsleves or anyone else life. If they did then before they went out to drink of do drugs they would hage plans to let someone else who wasnt, drive. It doesnt take much to think before hand. I just dont understand why people like to get that drunk in the first place, what is the point?

In many states it is against the law to drive under the influence of marijuana. My job is driving around San Diego county all day doing court filings and personal services and it gets quite boring driving all the time, so I like to smoke marijuana before I drive. I have been doing this job for more than two years and I have driven under the influence of marijuana to San Francisco, Los Vegas and other places. I am a very good driver and I have not gotten in any accidents. I think marijuana actually makes me a better driver because I watch out more because I am scared someone will hit me. Even the department of transportation did studies showing marijuana doesn't really effect you all too much (well, not as much as drinking), especially if you have a tolerance and the effects are not as 'intense' as people who only smoke once in a while. I know other people who drive while on marijuana and they drive just fine, no accidents.

uhhhh...... maybe because you are drunk and you are not thinking like you should be thinking. It happens, I work for the courts in california on a regular day there are around 50 cases being heard on the calandar that are DUI releated maybe 45 of those people will be convicted. probably 15 of those 45 convicted will get another DUI w/in the next 3-7 years. so that is 50 cases mon-fri 50 X 5=250 total cases for the week! and I don't live in a big city. but it happens! People tend to be bold when they are under the influence of alcohol.

I know a lot of ppl that drive drunk (I'm in college) and it seems when they are drunk they don't really care, don't think about the consequences, etc. Also, a lot of guys especially claim they can drive BETTER when drunk I know 2 guys who have driven plenty of times right beside or behind a cop when they were drunk but it seems like since they were drunk they have better concentration, but as soon as they get out of the car it's like they're drunk again. I mean I know it's wrong but I guess it's not hard to believe that some people can concentrate better (maybe if they know they shouldn't be doing it or they can get caught they are trying to be EXTRA careful). I don't agree with it but I know people personally that are like that. Also sometimes people don't have rides home and they don't want to be stuck there, leave their car, etc. *I'M NOT SAYING IT'S RIGHT, JUST GIVING SOME REASONS WHY PEOPLE DO IT*

The only time I did this I was the new guy in the crowd. Everyone else was driving home and I didn't want to be the only guy crashing at the party. Looking back I know I was an idiot. Now I never drive after drinking. Now I rarely drink.

Do you mean drunk drivers? Some people just think they aren't drunk. Just like you said, it impairs your judgment. I don't drink and drive, it's stupid. Some people think that a couple drinks won't impair their judgement, but it does. I really don't think your going to get any drunk drivers to answer this question. They can't justify themselves and are probably to drunk to be on yahoo answers.

Youth, stupidity, pride, ignorance, arrogance, denial pick anyone. Canada has a zero tolerance for drink drive. I've had my license suspended for 12 hours and that was all I needed to prevent me from assuming I was fine after two beers.
I think if you discover the why then you may actually have a cure!

When you drink and you get to a certain point in your drunkeness you don't think clearly. Do you think people who are drunk say, "Oh wait, I can't drive."
It doesn't happen very often that someone who is feeling "good" recognises the danger.

So, there is no why?

Do you think they set out before they leave their house to do it?

I don't drink and drive, but have asked those that do. They seem to think that they are still sober enough to drive and they are only driving a short distance. Idiots.

I think the same thing that makes us bullet proof after a 5th of Vodka. We think we can handle it. We think we're fine. Our balls and our egos get huge. I've done it literally thousands of times-two DWIs, luckily no one hurt. Glad to say i've been sober for almost 5 years. (3/20/2007)
