Awareness of being aware (self consciousness) is just a brain state that has developed in humans. I studied the so called 'problem of self consciousness' for 5 years off and on at Uni. I reached the conclusion that the only problem is the misuse of language (in Wittgenstein's sense) that gives rise to the non-problem in the first place. The mind is identical to the brain, and the brain is a very sophisticated organ that has developed the capacity of being aware of its own awareness. End of story. There is no problem. Thank you and goodnight.

There was an article in TIME Magazine recently about this. The truth is, we don't know yet. Some people speculate that we will never know; surely the consciousness cannot figure itself out. Then, others look upon it simply as another problem to solve; granted, it's a problem scaling as high as string theory and wormholes, but a problem nonetheless.
