Hi, i was wondering if anybody out there knows what course is most beneficial for a person wanting to direct and edit music videos? The course would need to be in the UK. Failing that dose anyone have any useful tips on D.I.Y directing? Note; answers like ''buy a video camera'' do not help!
Cheers :)

Indeed; go to film school. There you'd get lots of experience shooting, editing, and analyzing many different genres, probably including music videos.

DYI directing -- remember these things
(1) Shot framing -- divide the screen into thirds; put the main thing you're shooting on one of those third "dividing lines" (google "rule of thirds" and video film or photography for more) -- in other words, don't put the subject in the dead center of the screen.
(2) Technical -- light properly, not directly on, make sure the camera is properly exposed and in focus
(google "three-point lighting")
(3) Angles -- remember that just shooting something straight on at eye level isn't very interesting -- shoot up to make the subject more powerful, shoot down to make the subejct diminutive
(4) Visual interest -- THINK about your shots -- storyboard what you want to see for each shot -- colors, angles, zoomed in, out, effects, etc.
(5) Music videos are generally very fast action, fast cutting; think about cutting with the music at least every second if you have the technology to do so
(6) Try, Try Try again -- shoot from many different angles to edit together-- -shoot EVERYTHING once wide, once medium zoom, and at least once close up zoom.
(7) Capture the message of the song in the video.

Good luck!

Michael Moore- He did the impossible. truthfully close down Wall street and NYSE by the Sleep Now in the hearth video. How marvelous is that?!?! besides the reality that i could prefer to confess, he's a crappy action picture director, yet good music video director. He made the sleep now in the hearth video, no shield video, and awaken video. He in many circumstances did Rage against the gadget music video clips.

Lately, it seems music videos have been directed by established movie directors - like Spike Jonze or Michel Gondry.

So I think the best way to get into it is to go to film school. Because they really are like film shorts set to music.
