I purchased my new home last spring and wanted to know how much insulation it should have. It, currenly, has roughly 6 inches. The insulation was blown in and not laid like carpet.

The attic currently has 6-8 inches of blown insulation. Do I need more? Will it not only keep costs down in the winter but also in the summer ? I live in Dallas, Texas.

For your area it is recommended to have R-38 in your attic which is roughly 12" depending on what type of insulation you use. Check out this web site and it will answer all your questions about insulation. www.ornl.gov/~roofs/zip/ziphome.html

This depends on your local building codes. In California, 9" is required in the ceiling (R-30), 3.5" (R-13) walls and 6" beneath a raised floor.
