Onl;y with a router from what i know of . I've tried using 2 different cable modem boxes ( both NTL ) and the second didn't work as each box is prgrammed to a certain i.p and the second box was from a friend ( therefore not the same i.p ) .. NTL sell routers or most shops do like Argos . They normally say if suitable for cable or not . And each computer you connect must have a network adapter .. If 2 computers use the same network @ the same time the speed will be split .

You cannot use the USB and Ethernet socket at the same time.
You can get a router to connect between you computers and the cable modem.
Make sure you don't get one that says ADSL modem/router as this will be no use to you.
Linksys, Netgear and Belklin are good brands.

If you are connecting over USB 2.0 then it will be same speed. If you are using USB 1.1 then this will be slightly slow. If your computer is more than 3 years old then USB 1.1 is a possibility. (both modem and computer should support this)
Normally the broadband connection is 1 to 10 mbps, ethernet connection is 10/100 mbps USB 2.0 is 450 mbps USB 1.1 1.5 or 12 mbps.
Actual connection speed for a broadband connection rarely goes above 1 mbps so you won't notice any difference even if you are using USB 1.1

No, you can't split the signal but you can get a router to spread the signal to more computers. Look carefully before you buy a router though because most routers are adsl and ntl requires a dsl one as it is cable broadband

You will have to buy a DSL router, NOT an ADSL. Either wired or wireless should be OK. I have a wired router as it is much faster than wireless and is much more secure. A couple of holes in your walls and some flat category 6 cable to go under your carpets and you are away. Wired is much cheaper as well, despite all the hype about wireless, that is just slick marketing.
