What makes one a hero? Do you know of any heroes?

I define a hero as someone who does something totally selfless and for others, never once thinking of themselves or the danger they put themselves in, or the hardships they have to endure in order to do what they do, whatever it may be.

Someone is considered a hero when they do an exceptional deed. This person can be a fireman that battles a blaze to a policeman that saves a life or even a single mother that struggles to keep her family fed.
