Its about his leaving the group Genesis and starting out on hs own. One of his better decisions.
Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel both went on to become very successful in their own right....as though you needed to be told.

Yep, as others have said it's about him leaving Genesis - "I was feeling part of the scenery, I walked right out of the machinery".

i thought he was 'tripping' solsbury hill is on the outskirts of bath,quite near his home.i thought he was up there chillin,catching the view,smoking a joint....as you do.when thoughts of musical freedom came to him

he was dealing with moving on with his life, i much prefer erasure's cover version on their other people's songs cd.
