Isn't it time for minorities to do away with the crutches and start walking on their own?

Oh and by "racism" I mean institutionalized racism. Of course there are some racist people around, still, but they have no power because the law doesn't protect their beliefs.

I agree and disagree. As a black person, I can easily say that there are several individuals, black, white, and other that use excuses for their lot in life.

That being said, the mindset of many have not caught up with the law. Statistically, blacks in the US are arrested and jailed 75% more often than their white counterpart for the same infraction.

So I do agree with you about people making excuses for failure. I disagree that racism is no longer an issue although it is not as bad as it was and continues to improve.

Corporations are 50% less likely to interview a person with a black sounding name and/or voice for a skilled position.

that is extremely naive to have self belief there is not any racism anymore. besides the undeniable fact that it a miles better mistake to have self belief affirmative action somewhat ranges the enjoying field. It lowers standards for success. Granted as quickly as in a college or employment, the guy nevertheless might desire to accomplish to a minimum time-honored, yet different extra qualified people might have finished extra with the prospect. How does passing on extra qualified applicants (meaning potential pupils or workers) point the enjoying field? isn't it condescending to signify that minorities can not prevail without government intervention? And so a ways as suggesting an end to for affirmative, political applicants does not touch that one. i've got heard people say social risk-free practices is the third rail. ending affirmative action is like licking the third rail, status in puddle of water, together as conserving a lightening rod in a thunderstorm. the laptop crowd wins this one.

Affirmative action was put in place to battle DISCRIMINATION based on sex or race. Therefore Racism was used to Battle Discrimination. When you use evil to fight evil, you still are left with evil.

Racism does still exsist in many institutions. The way most opposers of your questions here make it sound, only the black and hispanic get picked on. That is a load of crap. Eveyone gets the pinch. The problem is that Americans are programed to believe that only blacks and hispanics are on the recieving end of racism beat stick. Sad.

Oh...JAFO,

Your headlines are great, but the difference between your headlines and the rest of them is that when a white or asian guy is done the same wrong it only reads "Man shot 19 times while in handcuffs". No one cares since a color was not inserted....

All those covert racists who only promote or hire 'their own kind' combine to form institutionalized racism. Its not overt any more, like the signs that used to say "NO Jews or dogs" in hotels, and it didn't have to add black folks because none of them would have been stupid enough to go there in the first place, but its there, right under the table, and if you need a law to prove it its there so the questions can be asked and the case can be judged in a court of law.

the whole point of "affirmative action" is to help racism in the work place...

do you think that if affirmative action was repealed that every workplace would just hire on merit? there are quite a few racists out there still unfortunately and this is in effect to balance the field... may not be perfect... but nothing is...

Black man shot 19 times while in handcuffs . Black man beat by police in New Orleans reporter shoved while retired black school teacher is bloodied by police beating . Black youth shot by security officers all charges dropped . Black man 16 gets oral sex from under age friend 14 at party and goes to jail for 10 years . Its alive and well . 30-50% unemployment among black men 18-25 . So the non english speaking mexicans can find work but a black man can not . Please tell me something that is true .Stop trying to make racism look as if it ended 20 years ago or something .

There is still Institutional Racism. Example Steve Cohen district 9 congressman from TN (D) asked to become a member of the Congressional Black Caucus. He was rejected and the only reason given was that he was white. Organizations can not reject you because of race or religion. It has to work both ways or it's crap.

I agree Affirmative Action is becoming moot.

However, there is still plenty of racism out there.

If you could do away with institutional racism by changing the law, why did we ever need affirmative action?

Answer: you can't, so we still do.

Affirmative Action is not a solution for racism. I would like to see people of all colors and nationalities have the same rights and no one group enjoy special rights that others don't have. Only in that way are we all truly equal.
