Dear Zoe
I think this is a good question. The funny thing is I find that If i live well toay then this is also planning for the future. Do good today, be happy etc then the future takes care of itself. Many people spent most of their time planning for a future that never happens missing out on a happiness today.

My moto in life is to be balanced. So, to answer your question, it would take both living for today and some planning.

A bit of both, don't be afraid to live life to the best of your ability while planning for the future.

Live for the day,the here and now, forget about what might come because you never know if this moment is your last.
My motto: Life is a circle of events, what goes around comes around.
