Did you put in sensors because a competent mechanic recommended that, or just because you thought it might help?

I'd suggest you find a good mechanic and have the problems evaluated. Did you check the vehicle before purchase?

More info please.

Does the brake pedal go all the way to the floor when the brakes go out, or is it really hard to push the pedal down?

What kind of car is it?

OK... since you give no addt'l info this is what I recommend. Fire your mechanic. He has given you very bad info. Your brakes are pretty much totally mechanical with no electrical intervention or assist at all. So the "sensors" that you paid for are bogus if that's what they were for.
You described a fast idle which may indicate that a vacuum hose is off, and it sounds like the vacuum hose to the brake power assist booster may be off or split.
Here is a perfect opportunity to learn a little about your car. Go to the auto parts store, (Pep Boys, O'Reilly, AutoZone) and get a Chiltons manual for your car. Look up the section on brakes and on the vacuum hose routing. There will be one hose that comes from the vacuum booster to the engine. Replace that hose and see if that does the trick.

Good luck
