Where I live right now it is in the negatives with wind chill (Illinois) and I'm wondering where the squirrels go when its this cold, windy, and snowing. Do they go underground?

They have nests either in holes in trees or that they have built in the branches.

They have either nests or sleep in tree cavities, depending on the species of squirrel. A lot of them will also nest together- even if they are usually solitary, a group creates more warmth, and they will sometimes put aside differences for warmth. The will go underground, but that is an exception- most prefer tree tops.

Tree Squirrels have nests in trees (or attics!) and when the weather is bad they may stay in there for days and days on end. They store up food for the duration. Most tree squirrels live alone except in very cold weather when they might share a nest for warmth.

Ground squirrels hibernate.
