in American folklore, a day that is popularly supposed to provide the key to the weather for the remainder of the winter (feb 2nd). Specifically, if the groundhog upon emerging from its hole, casts a shadow, it will return underground, thereby foreboding more wintry weather. There is no convincing statistical evidence to support this belief

Groundhog Day is the day that a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day and fails to see its shadow because the weather is cloudy, winter will soon end. If the groundhog sees its shadow because the weather is bright and clear, it will be frightened and run back into its hole, and the winter will continue for six more weeks.

It is the day which the groundhog comes out of its home for the townsfolk of Punxatawney to determine whether winter has ended or not. If the groundhog stays out, winter is over. If the groundhog casts a shadow & goes back in its home, then winter isn't over.

It's February 2, the day the groundhog comes out of his hole to see if his shadow is around. If his shadow is out he gets scared and runs back into his hole and we have 6 more weeks of winter. If he doesn't see his shadow it is spring. It's a really stupid holiday, I don't know who came up with it or how, but they must have had some really good drugs is my theory.

Well in the movie they ask a groundhog (looks like an over grown beaver) how much longer winter is going to last.
