The theme is superstition and tradition of superstition. They draw names in a yearly ritual and stone someone to death, and right up until it happens to the character in the story she is excited because it's a big day.

The Lottery Theme

I read that story 15-20 years ago but from what I can remember there was only one loser in "The Lottery" and that person would die, due to...population control?
It is a neat story because the reader doesn't know what the lottery is for until near the end.

There are numerous themes.

Hypocrisy is a big one. Mrs. D appologizes for being late. But when Mrs. H is selected, Mrs. D picks up a HUGE rock and wants everyone to hurry and hit her. So much for that friendship.

The fact that on the surface you think that everyone is equal but they aren't. There are people in charge of the lottery. If they are in charge, then they are above it - thus exempt.

Social classes are also big themes.

Read it - it's great!

Not everything that seems to be good is.

I loved this short story. Watch the movie "the Island" it is loosely based on this short story.

Ooh that's a good book! Did you read it? It's about a small town mentality when they are cut off from the rest of the world.

to win the lottery so you don`t get stoned to death by the people.
the reason they stoned the lose was because the loser would die for the sins of the town.

"we will rock you" or (seriously) "what goes around comes around" cuz the woman who gets it in the end really supported it.
