Program. The more you program the more you get a working understand of how Java works.
Try starting with the Hello World application. Customize it so it displays a different message.

I learned in University. Was hard at first because I didn't even know what programming was. Now there are lots of resources online where you can learn. You can get books (online or library or bookstore) and do tutorials online.
