I'm Italian and my dad is very old fashioned. You need to call him and ask if you could get together with him just you and him. Take him to dinner or lunch, make sure you pay and make sure that its not a dive but a classy place. You have to show him why you are worthy of his babygirl. you need to ask with confidence. When your working up to the question you have to start with the reasons why you would make a good husband to his precious daughter.
Sir, I have been dating your daughter for ___ now and I really love her. (tell him your futur plans, you will be picking up where he is leaving off and he needs to know your going to do a good job) My career is going really well and I plan on _(buying a house, getting a promotion etc.)____ in the future. I value family, and I would like to ask your permission and for your blessing to ask your daughters hand in marraige.
Worked for my husband, and my dad is not an easy man to get along with, I'm the only daughter and I have 6 brothers so if My hunny can do it you can too! Good Luck! and Congrats!

You couldn't find a better or more polite way of asking, than you'll see in The Godfather.
Al Pacino (Don Corleone) has the etiquette problem of asking for the father's approval, and it all works out very well. Obviously, you can ignore the various chaps wandering round with shotguns - that was pretty standard in Sicily then!
PS: Great film, even if you don't follow the advice!
Hope this is helpful.

Do what my husband did....
Take her father out for dinner just the two of you and talk. When the conversation is flowing good ask him. My husband said that my father told him that him asking that way was very bold and took a man to do it. My father was happy that it was a "formal" thing and not just a "hey I gotta ask you something" talk at the house. Maybe make plans to do something that her father will like..(golf / dinner / movie??) My father enjoyed the fact that my husband thought enough of him to make it like his own "special" event and he felt more involved with the wedding then to just walk me down the isle. He has said that it is truly one of his best memories. I am sure you will come up with something good! Good-Luck and Congrats!!!

It depends on your culture. In my culture its a bit of a formality on the wedding day for the father to give his daughter away to her new husband by saying ''I give you my daughter's hand and give you my blessing'' or something to that effect. But we didn't need my father's permission to get engaged.

"Sir, I have something to ask that I feel needs your attention. As you know, I have deep feelings for your daughter. I would be grateful if you would allow me the honor of your daughters hand in marriage."-Oh and BTW, might be best to do it during dinner while everyone else is there. Touch of class and all that.

Just pull him aside in the kitchen after a dinner some night...that's what I did. I told him how much I loved his daughter and that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her.

I think I was more nervous talking to my future father-in-law, than when I proposed to my wife. I know it is kind of an old fashioned practice, but I definitely think my father-in-law appreciated me showing him that respect. Take him out to lunch or do something that will be just the two of you.
