I know a lady who is teaching her two young children sign language as a primary language, they are 3 and under. She said the boy, older of the two, refused to speak and now signs for everything. It seems to me that this would be problematic once the child gets older and needs to communicate with other children, who obviously can NOT sign. At such an early age when he should be learning to speak, i wonder if the ability to learn the language would be somewhat hindered? I don't know, but those are my thoughts on the subject. it's one thing to teach your child both, or another language, but i believe you must be consistent between the two.
