Why do Black people take offense and get so mad when white people call them N word. But they call each other that all the time. Isn't that just putting each other down?

I can understand if a white person is putting them down by using that term, but what if they don't mean anything negative about it?

The N word originally came from Nigeria and the River Niger and I think only means, "brown". When I was much younger there was a dark brown colour usually related to clothing and it was known as N.... Brown, so I don't know why they get upset unless they look on it as a completely derogatory and defamatory epithet.

There is no logical reason for people to ever be offended by the language other people use. However, it is not logic that causes us to react. There is emotional baggage that we all carry in this culture that effect how we feel about others. Blacks are sensitive about this because it has been used over time to humiliate and put them down. If a white person uses it outside that context it really wouldn't matter. It would be perceived as a put down anyway. Blacks can use it with each other (although many of them are not that comfortable with it) because it is not historically been used to hurt each other.

Most intelligent Black people are offended by the N word no matter who uses it. It should never be used.

Unfortunately, a large number of Black people grow up using the word because our parents used the word (as part of the slang culture we adopt growing up), as did their parents before them. Everyone from time to time - Black and white - resorts to using racial slurs when angry. It's part of the fabric of racism that just exists in American society where race factors into everything we say and do.

Until we stop looking at people's skin color, until employers can hire without bias, until the media projects people of color more -- we will continue to use the word as a reflection of our demeaned perception of people of African descent.

Historically whites using the n word came hand in hand with violence, repression, subjagation, and dehumanization.

Why MUST whites be a part of this word. We didn't want to be apart of slavery (i mean be slaves) so we need not take slave epitaphs and reuse them because the oppressed have taken them as their own.

Go join an all white male country club...those ARE still allowed you know?
