It's an ancestor thing. But not all black people refer to themselves as that. I don't My family's west indian, I consider myself black, the whole "african american" thing is just a lil too much for me. I'm black but I'll admit it, I've always thought it was a lil over the top to force people to call us african americans, I don't mind just being black.. I guess in slavery days it was a derrogatory statement but come on!! lol. I always tell my white friends not to even bother, just call me black, it's cool! Sorry my people I gotta tell the truth.

Most Black American don't call themselves "African American," that saying came from white society, which to me is very dumb, most Black American has never been to Africa, so why call them AFRICAN, you can't be BOTH either you were born in Africa or America. why can't we just call each other Americans. why does it always has to show our difference?.........education is the key here, people

Has it occurred to some of you ignoramuses that African American is a title that Whites have given to Blacks? It's supposed to be a "politically correct" term. Not ALL Blacks refer to themselves as African Americans. Your generalizations just prove the stupidity that is this world. Continue the stupidity and the hatred. I expect it from some of you.

There has been a constant debate on finding the least derogatory "name" for people of African descent. My ancestors are from Madagascar, but I am an American. Born in Chi-town. But the answer is; society "gives" us a name and if it sounds less insulting than the previous one, it is used. We as a people never actually "vote" on this decision.

and for the comment before mines: how in the hell are we to call ourselves just "americans". EVERY DAMN JOB APPLICATION I FILL OUT HAS A CATEGORY THAT SAYS "AFRICAN AMERICAN or BLACK" How in the hell are we supposed to call ourselves something different than what we are labeled constantly!!
