Why is it we only have two scans. Do you think having too many scans is bad for the baby.

i dont think theres enough evidence to support either argument so the hospital just keep them to a minimum any way and the fact they cost over a £100 a time

I am assuming you are talking about ultrasounds.

Only in a high risk pregnancy will you get more ultrasounds.

I was high risk and had many ultrasounds... because I had high blood pressure throughout the term of the pregnancy and because I was over 40 and my DH was 45 so they checked for abnormalities in the fetus.

We were blessed to have an early scan that showed a rice like shape with a beating heart at only 7 weeks.

I had about 15 ultrasounds.
I am not sure how much they cost because I am in Canada so it was always covered under our OHIP plan.
As far as ultrasound harming the baby because you have too many.. that is hog wash... ultrasounds are harmless sound waves so it couldn't possibly harm the baby.

Nearer to end of the pregnancy the doctor may want a last one just to see if the baby is in a good position for delivery.

It's not necessary to have any more for most women. Scans can only pick up certain problems, and there are not benefits from doing additional scans (for uncomplicated pregnancies) because no extra information can be gained.
I don't believe that the benefits of having more than 2 scans outweighs the risks. There is some risk with scans, and it is best to limit them to those required to understand that the baby is healthy and developing ok.

You only have two scans one at around 12weeks that is the dating scan and one at around 20weeks this is the one where they look for any abnormalities, measure the baby etc, they may also be able to tell you the sex of the baby in this scan, then unless there is any concerns you don't have anymore, but even if you did as the baby gets bigger you can hardly make out what is what anyway, don't worry yourself, just enjoy your pregnancy,i don't think that having more than two scans would harm the baby, good luck Hun..xx

Probably is too costly. I live in a country where for 10 $ I could go and make an ultrasound every time I wanted so I did something like seven because it was my first child and I wanted to make sure everything was fine. My daugther is perfectly normal so I don't think there was any damage done. But then, I don't think there was real use in making so many of them. They satisfy your curiosity but they just give you the information that everything is fine which you would still find out after delivery even if you never had a scan. In problematic cases though, ultrasound gets a really great help and maybe then doctors schedule more of them.

yes i was reading and article and it said that the light that used when having a scan can harm the baby if done too often that's why they wait until you are 12 weeks pregnant to have a scan in case it cause danger for the baby.

First, in a healthy pregnancy, there is no reason to have multiple scans. Actually a healthy pregnancy usually includes only 1 scan. Plus, they are very expensive and insurance companies usually object to multiple scans unless they are warranted.

with my first baby the hospital picked up a problem with one of her kidneys at the 12 week scan and so they scanned me every month during the pregnancy to check the progress and she turned out fine.

in a healthy pregnancy you only need 2 scans, however if youve had a miscarriage you might have to have more scans so they can check progress
