There is really only one way to determine such a question. Not by endless cage match fights (as in the case of super heroes.) Not by number of votes, as that is only a popularity contest. But in the one way that is tangible and quantifiable, and has already been tabulated: by the volume of their marketing.
It is true that the oldest characters do have an advantage in terms of their longevity, but think for a moment—if they weren’t popular, and if they didn’t keep winning their fights, they wouldn’t have lasted so long, would they…?
The two characters who have appeared in more different media (text print, comic books, animated films, live action films, television and spinoff products like lunchboxes and underoos) and who have been translated into the most foreign languages (since they were originally English speaking American phenomena) are Tarzan and Superman
Of the two of them, Tarzan initially appeared in text print; also, his introduction to the public was a little earlier. Superman, because of his distinctive S emblem and bold colors is the more recognizable. So, take your pick. Because of my fondness for super heroes, I have a slight preference for Superman. But Tarzan is still great, too.
