Problem started after BT had been to fix my telephone line....before that my internet connection was ok. I do not have broadband. When l try to connect everything is making all the right noises and even sometimes gets as far as verifying password etc then it stops and starts redialling and there is an engaged tone. You can be lucky and after about 20 attempts you get online but it is very fraustrating. Technical info --- l had a DACS ( i think that was what it was called ) telephone line but the BT guy when he fixed my telephone line put me on a normal line....could this have caused a problem, he said it would be faster. Any suggestions ????

(I too am on dialup, so I sympathize with you...and now I hear ads on TV that DSL is considered snoringly slow!) Yes I have that same problem on one of my two laptops but not on the other, same phone line, leading me to conclude it's the modem. At one point, I had to replace the modem on the older laptop, resulting, for awhile, in speedy connections, then things started going back downhill. Meanwhile on my new (this year) PC I get almost instantaneous (first or at most second ring) connect! Sometimes, though, I understand a virus may interfere. But, I suspect I'm not helping you except to commiserate...

It is possible that your filter - DSL/Phone - box that you plug into your phone line has gone faulty. (This is a problem I've had now a couple of times and none of the answers from BT or elsewhere suggested pointed to this as the possible problem).
The way to check it is to swap your present box serving your computer with another one. You can safely install a "faulty" box where only a telephone is fitted - but not where the DSL facility is required. So swap them around and try again - if you don't have another telephone jack in your house then you should have been given two boxes in the kit, therefore take the unused one out and try that.

There are some routers that provide dial-up as a backup. These do not come with WiFi option. If you set such router up, and default it to the dial-up, the router will keep the connection, and you will be able to connect that router to a WiFi Access Point. In general modems are "dumb" and cannot establish, and maintain a connection without a computer.

I think the BT guy has couased the problem, you can fix it your self. just open the connection of your modem to the telephone line and assemble it again

Phone BT and tell them the problem. We did cuz the internet was down. They fixed it and it worked fine afterwards.
