The term indie stands for independent, meaning that the band is not signed to a major record label. It's a very broad description when it comes to being a "genre" because indie could be a lot of different types of music. There is indie rock, indie hip hop, indie pop, indie R&B, indie rap. So as you can see, it doesn't tell you much about what kind of music is actually being played, but usually you hear the term when people are refering to indie rock or alternative.

Indie means independent. However, being an independent artist doesn't mean you go without a label or distribution, it simply means you don't carry a contract with anyone. Your music is your own to do with as you see fit. You can sell it, your label can sell it, your promotor can promote it and they all get a small cut, however you can still do whatever you want with it.
It doesn't mean pop and guitars....you can be an indie artist in any genre. I myself am an independent recording artist in the Progressive Electronic genre. I get radio play, I sell albums at Barnes and Nobel, Yahoo Music, Best Buy....etc. I got to say, It's very hard to be an independent artist because you have to be responsible for everything from promotions to distribution. You have to be willing to handle business and operate at a loss for most indie artists. For the non-indie artist, the major labels handle every aspect of the artist's music.

the origins of the indie music was sonic youth and the pixies, they take the indepent road away of the mainstream, with a soft rock with some pop influences, but they had a high quality.

it means "independant" music. bands that toured and toured until they finally made it mainstream. but thanks to bands like the killers, razorlight etc, indie is just pop with guitars.
