two week wait is about right.. if you are irregular... or are not "28" days it may be that you are off on how late you are.... or the stress/frustration of worrying about being pregnant might have stopped your period? for some it happens.. me it has been known to.. if I am worried that I missed my period and am pregnant? and keep worrying, I do not get my period... but? I am not pregnant... ?
also keep in mind something I don't think many think about? are you sharing a room with a new room-mate (or any) start hanging out with any new girlfriends? oh yes.. this is an odd one I know... but for some their periods change to that of who they spend a lot of time with... it is all chemical reaction etc... and the girl/woman who has the most regular.... or is chemically alpha almost? hers is the established and others change to match.. it is why sisters, mothers and daughters... even "best friends" sometimes have it the "same time of month" just another idea of "why, what and huh?"
hope it all turns out well... good luck
you might want to also go with what one of the answers... request a blood test next time... more sensitive....

When hubby and I were trying to conceive last summer, I swore I was pregnant. Turned out I had a very bad UTI (Urinary Tract Infection)...which can cause alot of the same symptoms as pregnancy. I was sore all over, urinating all the time, bloated, felt so tired, had metal taste in my mouth, lower abdominal cramping, my period was messed up, spotting, backache. Those are just a few of the symptoms I experienced. Got meds and got everything fixed up. The very next month we were pregnant. I am now 30 weeks and counting with our second son. Some women get negatives for a while or there could be other causes, such as infections or stress. Good luck with your testing. I hope you get the answer your looking for.

Nausea & Vomiting
Nausea and vomiting may come as early as a week into the pregnancy. Many women experience illness in the morning (morning sickness), some in the afternoon or evening, others feel feel nausea throughout the entire day. There is no explanation as to why pregnant women feel this or even a solution as to how to prevent it - however, eating small frequent meals, and snacking on saltine crackers seems to give some kind of relief. Eating a protein/carboy hydrate at bedtime (try an apple and a glass of milk) tends to lessen the nausea that occurs in the morning.
Breast Tenderness
Breasts may be very tender, swollen and start to enlarge. Many times the veins within the breast will become more visible. Your nipples may start to darken in color, become more erect and be extremely sensitive. These symptoms are due to increasing amount of HCG hormone that begins at implantation.
Frequent Urination
Pregnancy causes the uterus to swell and it will start to enlarge for the growing fetus immediately. The uterus puts pressure on your bladder making you feel the need for more frequent urination. Many women start to feel this symptom within a week or two after pregnancy has occurred.
Feeling Tired / Sluggish
This one is pretty obvious. When pregnant your body is going through some major hormonal changes. HCG levels alone go from 0 - 250,000 mIU/ml in just twelve weeks. Your temperature is also higher due to the amount progesterone circulating through your body which will also make you feel a little sluggish.
Light Bleeding
Light bleeding (spotting) may occur approximately 8 - 10 days from ovulation. It usually happens around the same time you would have gotten your menstrual period. Some women assume they have started their period when in fact they are pregnant. The spotting is caused from implantation which is when the fertilized egg burrows into the endometrial lining.
Dizziness and/or Fainting
When standing in one place you may feel dizzy or even faint. The growing uterus compresses major arteries in your legs which causes your blood pressure to drop making you extremely light headed. Skipping meals or going too long without eating may cause you to feel dizzy or faint. When not eating frequently enough it causes low blood sugar. Blood sugar is the primary source of food for your baby so it will be depleted much more quickly.
Constipation
Pregnancy hormones will slow down bowel functions to give maximum absorption time of vitamins and nutrients. Unfortunately, this symptom usually only gets worse as the pregnancy progresses.
Irritability
Raging hormones are the cause of this...along with having to put up with all the other symptoms. This symptom should decrease soon into the second trimester but until then, a healthy diet, moderate exercise and plenty of sleep should help the crabbiness somewhat.
Heartburn
The uterus is very swollen and starts to push upward as it grows. The increasing levels of HCG will also slow down digestion making your stomach not empty as fast which increases the stomach acid.
Uncomfortable - But Well Worth It!
After your precious baby arrives, you will soon forget the bouts of nausea and the discomfort you are now experiencing.

All my sisters pregnancy test came negative. My best advise would be to get a blood test that is very accurate, it will test for the pregnancy hormone which should be there if you are 17 days pregnant. Its hard to hear "wait two weeks" because in all that time your either stressing or getting excited you dint want to be disappointed. I know you will probably take a pregnancy test every day for the next two weeks. Good luck on what every result you are hoping for!

Anne,
cycles are strange things and can be effected by stress.
I would take another urine test at 21 days late.
If your cycle doesn't start by 30 days, you need to be in a doctors office.
A nurse will tell you the truth. Until such time, you need to make plans for all the potential outcomes. All of them. Trust your mother to help you. Emotions will run "high" so be patient. She loves you more than you know- and when you a momma, you will understand that love.

I think she's wrong. Home pregnancy testing kits are supposed to be a lot more sensitive than the ones the Dr's use. A false negative is possible with a home test, but there's normally two in the kits so do it again. Aren't they supposed to be able to detect the pregnany hormone in your urine the day you miss your period? Thats what the adds say anyway!

It is standard procedure as you may be stressed and that's why your period may be late. I took a test that said negative and I was a month and half pregnant at the time.
If you are that anxious and can afford it, take an ultrasound. It will show pregnancy or any other thing that may be affecting your cycle. That's what I did.

you should be able to tell from the day that your period was late. Do another test because it might have been a false positive that you had. Are you registered with a doctor? because if you are you can make an appointment yourself. If not you should register with one ASAP to get this sorted.
Could be that your cycle is upset due to stress etc. Good luck
