D. Survival and reproduction are what determines a successful animal from an unsuccessful one. avoiding predators and finding food although are useful they are part of survival, a characteristic that evolves is also an okay answer but an adaptation is a characteristic that has already evolved. For example it is considered that feathers of a bird are adaptations for warmth, and the ability to fly was an exaptation.
