There are loads of things you can do for free:

Museums (V&A, British Museum, Natural History Museum, Science Museum) and Art Galleries (National Gallery, Tate Britain and Tate Modern).

In the summer when the weather is lovely try just chilling out in a park (Brockwell Park in Brixton is gorgeous). Go with a rug and a good book.

Take a walk along the Southbank - some great buildings to take in, plus you can wonder through the second-hand book stalls and pick up a classic for a really good price, then stop at one of the restuarants for something to eat.

Whilst you wouldn't have much time, what with only being here for a summer, all the above is good advice however in my opinion Cambridge is a more beautiful city than Oxford and because you'd still want to go there, go to both. Cambridge is easily accessible from London Liverpool Street Train Station. Also worth visiting are Lincoln/Chester/Windsor/Canterbury/Tunbridge Wells/Salisbury.
Also Bournemouth has a far better beach than Brighton, and is not full of Londoners on day trips.

Use the University of London Union as a base- they always love international students.

The London Eye is worth a trip.

You can get to know more about certain parts of British culture from cafes and pubs than any where else, though. Try a Turkish cafe in North-East London, or if you're wanting to stay central, try the Princess Louise pub on High Holborn (http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/19/194/Princess_Louise/Holborn), which is busy around lunchtimes and 1730 to 2030 but cheap and not dull and plastic like some big chain pubs.

make the most of the museums, the permanent collections are free to enter, and there are amazing museums in london...!
apart from that, just do the normal stuff, have a pint in a pub, ride a double-decker bus, shop on oxford street... oh and make sure you have sunday lunch at least once. it's gorgeous.
try and travel too, brighton, bath, bristol, oxford are all within 2 hour's train ride...
enjoy!!!!!
