I know that in 1926 Woodson organized the first annual ***** History Week, which took place during the second week of February. Woodson chose this date to co-incide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln - two men who had greatly impacted the black population.
Over time, ***** History Week evolved into the Black History Month that we know today - a four-week-long celebration of African American History.
But I am an Indian...we don't celebrate.
Wishes to all who celebrate!

Personally, I don't celebrate black history month. I respect it but I don't celebrate it, and it has nothing to do with the fact that I'm white. As well as Black history Month, I do not celebrate st. patricks day, Valentines day, or any other "holiday" that doesn't effect me that much personally. I always believed that Black History Month wasn't even a holiday really. Just a time of the year to reflect specifically on black heritage and history and to be educated.
Considering I'm in highschool, and I've been educated many many many times on that subject.. I don't really take it in anymore ( seeing as I know it anyways), but of course, I still respect it.

You are kidding, right? This is NOT a holiday for celebration, it's a month centered on educating people about black contributions to history. It's a governmental program rather than a holiday.

I saw a black man in a hood walking by my house with his hands in his pockets yesterday 8:00PM when I got home. There was no one else in the vicinity. I walked past him on my way to my house- versus avoiding him - and I said "Hi." He said "good evening." There have been a number of robberies in my neighborhood by black assailants. I simply assumed that not all black people in my neighborhood are thugs and said "hi" to the gentleman as I intentionally walked past him. He didn't rob me. He was no criminal. While my conduct is not to be lauded and should be expected - unfortunately most people would stereotype and hurt people's feelings - thus leading to further deterioration of black/white relationship..
