A dream is recalled most easily if we awaken during it or immediately after it ends. If more than a few minutes lapse at the end of a dream, we risk forgetting of the dream.
Also your dreams might occur in non-REM sleep. The people who dream in REM sleep remember more.

Dreams are the way of dealing with our problems and are natural and necessary to keep our sanity.
If you fear the dark then you'll dream a lot about darkness..... it's nothing bad, no sign of getting insane, only you're dealing with your "problems".
Dreams we remember are mostly memories, not dreams. Dreams are created in our mind, so a dream you remember isn't really a dream because dreams aren't stored in memory.
Try analyzing that "dream" and you might notice that it has probably happened to you in reality.
Such "dreams" are important moments in your life like traumas (diasters, accidents) or very happy moments (first kiss etc) that need to be "processed" by the brain, that's why they sometimes replace the dreams because their "analysis" works better at night when the brain's life sustaining functions work only and not the conscious mind.

What you need is a dream dictionary. It gives you everything answers to the questions you might want to know about your dreams. And also it explains about why do we have dreams in the first place and why we can remember some of them so well.

our minds unlike our bodies never sleep. so they are always going even when the body sleeps. and as with anything they don't last. but when we are aware that we are dreaming we can usually remember them but only the parts we are seeing at the time. other times we are not aware we are dreaming so we don't remember them. if they have a profound impact on us we remember them more then others, but if not we will forget them. its just the way our minds react on the info its given.

Some dream every night. Some dream on occasion and some never dream. I remember my dreams - sometimes.

Dreams are truths that happen or will happen that occur within your sub-conscience.
