have seen the new acer 5633 which seems to have the best spec 4 the money, but seen a philips x55 for £650 a sony n11h for same... any ideas please? want good processor and 100gb hard drive 1024 ram - preferably with brightscreen!

Id go for the Acer. In the last year or so they have managed to get really good spec laptops for about £500. That particular model is a very good spec. for the £s

Ignore the muppets who think you need to spend more than that.

Dual core, good HDD size, Good ram what else you needing?

I'm not sure what the market is like in the UK, but 500 pounds, nearly a thousand USD, can buy a pretty decent laptop here in North America. No need to buy a cheap one with that kind of budget.

I would stay away from Acer - they tend to be bottom of the line budget models, made with cheap components and not built to last. Look for deals on Dell models (they have savings codes in the newspaper here all the time), or consider a Toshiba. I have owned several laptops, and have been most pleased with the Toshiba models.

You get what you pay for. If you buy £500 laptop it will be of bad quality and have a short lifespan. The longest i've seen a laptop last is aroun five years and that was worth around £900.

My advise save you money and invest in something of higher quality and money.

go to dell you will get very good laptops ,with all ur needs mabe for under 500 quid better than sony or philips brand easy to use ,ok brian b
