So, in the Metro Detroit area school has been cancelled for the second day in a row due to the cold.

Yes, zero and negative 2 is cold, but it is not drop dead, face freezes if you step outside cold.

I don't know about you but my boss doesn't call off work for "cold".

I cannot believe that in this day of global economies that the best way to make sure our children have jobs and are successful is to teach them to call off work all time.

Your thoughts?

Save money? Are you nuts? The teachers still get paid, the janitors still get paid, principal, secretary, still get paid.

And they don't turn the heat down, there is no MONEY savings.

Not to mention all the people who now have to scramble to find childcare and pay for it. This costs my employees an extra $100 or so, how is that saving any money?

When we were children we went to school in the cold (I remember it being -5 one morning). We walked to the bus stop. We wore boots mittens, hats and scarfs around our faces, and we all SURVIVED.

We are raising wussy, non-working, lawsuit happy future adults. Don't you get that?

I would suggest that you might attempt an experiment. Select a location approximately 1 mile from your home. Now, wait until a day when the temperature is -2. Make sure that there is just a little breeze...nothing big...just maybe 5 or 10 miles per hour. Now, go walk to that spot and back. Feel cold yet? It's NOT solely what the temp is that determines school closure; it has to do a lot with CONDITIONS, including temperature and something you might not have heard of...WIND CHILL. Now, if you don't mind children going to school when the temp is -2, especially when the accompanying wind chill is probably -20, then clearly there is something rather callous about your temperament.

As for your boss, there is a very high probability that he would call off work if the CONDITIONS, such as heavy blizzard or icy roads, merited such a response. You, however, are allegedly an adult who should have enough sense to know whether it's safe for you to go to work or not, irrespective of what your boss says. We, as a society, do not expect the same level of competency from minors that we do from adults. By the same token, the schools also have to take in consideration their risk of liability given weather conditions as they are operating "en loco parentis" i.e. in place of parents. Sometimes schools are overly cautious, typically because it's better to BE SAFE THAN SORRY WHERE CHILDREN ARE CONCERNED.

I think they should teach most kids how to work french fry machines, cash registers, and the proper way to sweep then mop a floor. Teaching them how to change diapers and take a parental DNA test would save the collective counties some dough too. That's what most of them end up doing, what with fast food and teen pregnacy being the backbone of the American economy.

I agree.

Look behind the message, as it is usually about money. School closed during a cold spell means saving dollars on heat, snow clearing and all manner of other things.

It seems to me, a mother, that any excuse to reduce the number of teaching days is a way for the system to save money.

One point, a lot of the kids there are poor and do not have adequate protection from the cold. To make them miss school because of physical risks would not be cool.

Your boss probably deals with a limited number of people. Global economies strongly depend on good environments and weather.

they do it to save money. Plus if the bus drivers are coalling in, and the cafeteria workers aint coming to work, it make school hard to run, so better to save the money and call it off. Svae on the heat bill to.
