Yeah, he was. Why wonder? Just close your hand really fast so your fingers slap against your palm. That's the sound.
Or if you do a normal clapping motion with one hand, the sound your hand makes is the whooshing sound of displaced air as your hand moves through it. You can hear it if you put your ear close to your moving hand.
(And the student was enlightened.)
