alternator makes A/C current, a generator make D/C current.
A/C switches polarity on a regular time period, D/C stays the same polarity at all times.

A generator produces straight DC current. An alternator produces AC...for Alternating Current, but uses a bridge rectifier (Diodes) inside to convert the AC to DC - Direct Current. You car uses DC current.

Err ... Basically, what the two answers above is saying is that they function differently but provide the same thing to your car. (Electricity) AND your car is built to use one or the other - they are not interchangable and you won't have both. Make sense?
