Wearing briefs is not to keep testicle firm, to keep them from flopping around. Boxers don't provide any support, the equipment just hangs there, boxers just separate them from the outside or from your pants.
Boxers are designed to be worn inside pants, hence the single button or two for the fly--most boxers can expose you through the fly easily. Normal shorts either don't have a fly, you just pull down the waistband to pee, or have a zipper fly to hide the jewels.

briefs stem back from older times when sports started becoming popular world wide they wore a cup or tighter briefs to keep from the family jewels from whaling around at the end of a short short pair of jogging shorts or wrestling or tennis shorts.

so when they have sex it won't poke the person your with. normal shorts don't have the cut to pee and the boxer shorts do, you can pull out when you need to pee.
