You can learn anything you want to at ANY age.
Best thing you can do is call a swim club and ask about lessons. Also, check if they have Red Cross training. The club I was a member of when I was younger didn't allow anyone to swim in the deeper areas without the Red Cross training. I don't know how many places adopt this rule, but it's a good idea and helps you stay safe in the water....
Good Luck and have fun!

ofcourse you can. The speed at which you learn will vary. Its really dependant on each person. Ihave met a bunch of high 40 years old that can out run or out anything 18 years old. Ofcourse at your age I don't think you can become oympic material. But you certainly cna improve your cardio. Swiming is a low impact exercise so its a realy good choice for you.
I think the most important thing to remember is to have fun. Talk to the people at the Y and I'm sure they'll help you. But remember, if its not fun then is a waste of time.

Yes you certainly can. I used to teach swimming and taught a fun older class every one had fun and it was rewarding for us all. So go and enjoy yourself you will meet others all in the same boat or in your case swimming pool. However if you are shy and want a few private lessons then go ahead with thisuntil you are ready to take the big dip. At your age you are in the new middle age so go and enjoy doing everything you ever wanted to learn and do while you can.

yes- you can teach an old dog new tricks.
There's probably a swim coach (or assitant coach) at the Y who'd be willing to give you some private instruction. It's just a matter of them showing you what to do and then you doing enough to build up the muscle memory until it feels natural

Well, the way I was taught (must be an old school method) was this:
My grandpa took me out to the lake and tossed me in....I barely swam back to shore.
Then he took me out to the deepest part and tossed me in...again, I barely made it to shore.
Now the hardest part of this method wasn't learning how to swim, it was trying to get out of the bag!!!
